September 21, 2016 is International Day of Peace - or Peace Day. Created by the United Nations in 1981, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.
Our CARES Teams in South Texas will be using Peace Day as a platform to start good conversations with their neighbors. Teams are hosting simple gatherings with residents to take a moment to celebrate peace in the midst of our chaotic and uncertain world. It will be less like an event, and more like an act of care for their residents.
For anyone else who wants to participate - here's a flyer with lots of room for personalization. To our South Texas teams who have already started planning their event - we would love for you to share more about your event in the Comments below. And, we found some ideas you could incorporate into your celebration on Pinterest.
There are many ways to celebrate peace - peace in the midst of a racially charged environment. Peace in the midst of war. Peace in the midst of a heated presidential campaign. Peace in the midst of your own neighborhood. Whatever you focus on - we pray it's an inspirational event that brings people together in a new way.
