Kentucky Derby Garden Party

Download Flyer

This party is the perfect excuse to talk in that charming southern accent of yours that you practice in the mirror every morning. And also, so you can buy one of those big, obnoxious hats (or maybe just pull it out of your closet). Serve your neighbors mint juleps, dainty snacks, and entertain them with some themed-out games. Your community will have lots of fun with this unique party idea, and we're sure you'll have fun planning it, too! And as a reminder to our CARES Teams - Refer to the alcohol policy on the CARES Team toolkit (under General – Apartment Life Policies – CT Policy Guide), and sync with your Program Director if you have questions.

Spring Wreath Decorating Party

Download Flyer

The changing seasons brings a need for new decorations. A wreath is the perfect way to welcome spring and provide some beauty for your neighbors to enjoy.

Host a Spring Wreath Decorating Party and help your craft-loving residents (as well as your craft-challenged residents) create something beautiful to greet them every day when they get home.

Provide some light snacks (or cocktails), and be sure to include some ambient music to set the party mood. We have created a Pinterest board with spring wreath ideas.

And, if your event is a hit, don't forget that we also have our Fall Wreath Decorating Party flyer available for use.

Zumba Class

Download Flyer

Some of our CARES Teams have found success from hosting special work-out classes. You can probably find a local instructor willing to hold a class for free in exchange for free marketing. Even better, provide cold towels, fresh fruit and bottled water at the end of class to make your residents feel extra spoiled.

Other ideas:

  • If you don't have a place to host at your clubhouse, you could offer a special class at a local gym exclusively for your residents.
  • Ask a local gym to hand out coupons for a free trial membership to all attendees
  • Ask a vendor to provide work-out related freebies or the cold towels/fruit/water
  • Partner with a local doctor or hospital to provide free health screenings and turn it into a full-fledged health and wellness expo
  • Ask a vendor to print special t-shirts with your property name and the event name on the front, and their logo on the back

This flyer can be used for Zumba or any other type of aerobic class. If you decide to host a class, post a picture on your regional Facebook page or on Instagram using the hashtag #CARESteam so we can see your group in action!

Garden Party

Garden Party

A Garden Party just sounds sophisticated, doesn't it? Like you should attend wearing some big Kentucky Derby hat and drinking a mint julep or something?

There are so many fun ways to host a garden party... here's just a few ideas:

  • Simply hand out potted plants at the gate to residents as they arrive home from work.
  • Host a day of working in your shared community garden.
  • Host your local plant store for a gardening class. Succulents are all the rage right now, but you can also offer info on container gardening, herb gardening, vegetable gardening, etc.
  • Host a cocktail party at your own community garden.
  • Host a garden-themed party and hold drawings for floral arrangements or pretty potted plants.
  • Give out packets of seeds as party favors.
  • Serve fresh veggies, herb-themed foods, and a garden-themed signature cocktail.
  • Host your party off-site at your local plant nursery for a class and food/cocktails after-hours.
  • Don't forget, we also have a blog post and flyer for an Urban Container Garden class.

Happy gardening!

Eat and Exercise

Get Healthy

Download flyer

Make healthy into a social event by hosting a workout class + nutrition presentation at your apartment community. Whether it's yoga, zumba, weight lifting, or anything else you can imagine, the goal is to provide a fun experience for your residents and include some get-to-know-you time before or after.

A bonus: provide iced towels after the class to help your residents cool down.

CARES Team Jon and Elizabeth in Nashville, TN, hosted their own Eat & Exercise event that was a huge hit with the residents. March is National Nutrition Month, so this event could be a timely tie-in.

McGlathery

For those teams with limited on-site meeting space, this event could easily be held at a nearby gym or YMCA.

We left you plenty of space on the flyer so you can personalize this event for your own community. You can download it here.

BBQ Master Class

P

Download flyer

We have found that some people who would never feel comfortable mingling at a party feel right at home attending a class and learning a new skill. We have many ready-made classes to choose from, from hosting a Cooking Class to a CPR Training. For a full list, visit just click here.

We're adding one more to the list: a BBQ Cooking Class. It's pretty easy - all you need is a grill and a local chef to demonstrate for your residents. You can offer the basics, or offer something more unique like Grilling with Wild Game.

Don't know a chef? There are several places to start:

  • Call your local BBQ restaurants
  • Ask around at church
  • Look up cooking schools (some gourmet grocery stores also offer cooking classes)
  • Find a friend with a hidden talent
  • Check out your local college or culinary school

We've got more ideas on our BBQ Pinterest Board.

Cake Decorating Class

Cake Decorating

Download flyer

I have always secretly wanted to be a cake decorator, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. Help your residents learn a new skill, enjoy some sugar, and get to know each other by hosting a cake decorating class.

It's really not that hard. Ask around your network of friends to see who knows how to decorate cakes. You can also ask your church for names, or contact a local bakery and ask if they would be willing to teach a class in exchange for free marketing. Some craft stores also offer classes and might be willing to send an instructor.

We have created a Pinterest board with cake decorating ideas and techniques in case you need some inspiration.

Ask your residents to bring unfrosted cupcakes or an unfrosted cake. Cupcakes will give them more opportunities to experiment with new techniques. Work with your instructor to find out which supplies you'll need to purchase - provide each attendee with basic supplies, and for the more expensive items, just provide enough to share. You could hold a drawing to give away some supplies or a specialty chef's apron.

Since guests will probably eat their cupcakes, you may choose to simply serve beverages. A Gourmet Coffee Bar would compliment the sweets, or serve a seasonal signature beverage like pink lemonade in the spring or hot apple cider in the winter.

Don't forget, we also have a children's cupcake decorating event on the blog.

Astronomy Night

Astronomy Night

Logan & Ashley are our CARES Team at Terraza Del Sol in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. They hosted a fantastic astronomy night for their community and it was a big hit! Logan & Ashley invited two Astronomers from a near by university to come to their property, and the Astonomers brought along their super-duper telescopes for some above-and-beyond star gazing. The Astronomers were very knowledgable, talked with residents about what they were seeing through the telescopes, and had a little Q&A session. Questions and answers ranged from general space questions, to black holes, to wormholes. How could you bring something like this to your community? Can you partner with a local university to bring out Astronomers, Scientists, or any other kind of experts?

This is an excellent event that exemplifies thinking outside the box and getting the local community involved.

Business Cards + Bubbly

HiRes

We're talking networking... Fall Edition! You could host a classic networking event where your residents exchange business cards, get to know one another better, and have a good time. Here are some tips for staging a successful networking event from marketingsherpa. (This might attract some of those residents who don't normally come to your events.)

Or you could host a vendor night. Everyone seems to be selling something these days, so you probably have at least a handful of residents who would love to showcase their business or product. And then at least a handful who like to go shopping. Invite local vendors to this event to get the community involved and support local business at the same time. Is there a boutique down the street? Invite them to bring a rack of dresses to display and sell. A local brewery? Ask them to provide a cash bar for the evening. Think along the lines of a Farmer's Market.

For an added twist, make it a fall-themed cocktail party (Business Cards + Bubbly). Our Pinterest board is full of fall-themed appetizers, desserts, and drinks. You can DIY or bring in a local bartender. Check out our Fall Harvest Pinterest Board for some fall decor ideas.

Happy Networking!

Event Flyers Galore

Have you checked out the free, editable event flyers on our blog lately?

We've decided to put all the event flyers from each blog post onto a Pinterest  board, Event Flyers Galore, so they can all be viewed in a "list" format. Based on CARES Team feedback, some of our teams wanted a list of event ideas, so our newest Pinterest  board will function as just that. Each flyer will link back to its blog post with more details and the downloadable version.

Cool, huh? We think so, at least.

Here's the link. Check it out, pin, and share!

June is Fresh Fruits and Veggies Month!

Can we all agree that the world (okay…maybe just America) needs to eat more fruits & veggies? Research tells us that doing so would solve lots of our health problems… so let’s celebrate National Fresh Fruits & Vegetables Month! Maybe if we celebrate fruits & veggies BIG enough, it’ll help our cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart disease… maybe? While we’re celebrating nature’s bounty with a watermelon seed spitting contest, a “Who can make the best sour lemon face?” contest, or bobbing for peaches, why not give some tips, tricks, and facts to help a sista (who needs to add color to her diet but hates anything that’s not a carb) out?

You could make this event all fun, games, and celebrating or throw in your desired amount of “education” along with it. Here are a few ideas we came up with:

  • Serve “in season” fresh fruits & veggies.
  • Label each fruit/veggie you serve with its health benefit {pictured}.
  • Make and serve dishes using fresh fruits/veggies and be sure to print out copies of the recipe for people to take home.
  • Display how many {2-4 cups of each depending on age, gender, & level of activity} fruits/veggies people need to eat and promote this calculator for people to find out for themselves!
  • Have a “salad building” party and provide out of the ordinary fruits/veggies. Great for kids!
  • Have a “try it out!” demo/table for how to  improve your skin with lemons. Be sure to try these out for yourself first!
  • Educate about food label reading or have a “Can you read it?” Food Label Reading Bee to see if people can pronounce what they’re eating (if I can’t say it… I don’t eat it!).
  • Talk about clean eating.

The possibilities are endless! Be sure to check out our Pinterest board for even more ideas (and events!) and don’t forget to tag us in your pictures on Instagram…@aptlife with the hashtag #CARESteam.

CPR Certification Course

  P

Download Flyer

Build community and save lives at the same time by hosting a CPR Certification Course.

Contact your local fire department and ask them if they offer a course. Most will have someone who goes to local businesses and schools to teach a class. You can also contact your community hospital (ask for the Education Department) and ask them for a good contact. If those don't work, go to the Red Cross website and search for classes in your community.

red cross

This event is perfect for those who don't have a good onsite meeting space because it can be easily hosted at a public library or other community meeting space, and the cost to you is almost nothing. The class may also attract people who don't normally attend.

Students will pay the teacher directly.

Provide snacks and drinks, and be sure to bring info promoting your next CARES event. Check out our Pinterest board for more ideas!

Flyers: You can choose between two different options for flyers:  (1) a color, full-page flyer, and (2) a color, half-page flyer.
