The Cooper River Bridge Run

bridge run fest am 1

Kristen & Brent are our CARES Team at The Boulevard in Charleston, SC. They recently hosted a couple of really neat events centered around a big, annual event that goes on in their community: The Cooper River Bridge Run. Here's the lowdown:

They hosted a morning event and an evening event!

bridge run fest am 2

The morning event included handing out water bottles, bananas, headbands, and shirts with their property's logo on them. It was a great marketing opportunity for their Greystar property because they handed out thousands of items with the property's logo. They also hired an '80s band (a big hit that scored the team and the property some time on the 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. news) to play while the runners were waiting for the race to start.

6:00 a.m. '80s dance party anyone?

bridge run fest am 3

Then, Kristen and Brent hosted a relaxing evening event on race day for runners and their families to enjoy on The Boulevard property. They had a low-country boil for dinner, complete with a small acoustic band (made up of people they knew). This was also another great marketing opportunity for the property (and CARES) because people could come in, see the property, and experience first-hand what CARES has to offer. Not to mention the biggest impact…

Getting to connect with tons of people from around the community!

bridge run fest night 3

How could you get more involved in your city's community? Is there an annual event that happens in your backyard or one that you could easily set up a tent/station at?

bridge run fest night

What about marketing for your apartment community by representing them? This Greystar Property Manager, Regional Manager, Senior Managing Director of Real Estate, and more "high-ups" really enjoyed this event. They gave public kudos for it and have asked that it happen more often!

Volleyball Tournament

Volleyball Tourney

Download Flyer

CARES Teams... it's time to get competitive! Let's host a volleyball tournament! If volleyball (or sports of any kind) isn't your thing, here's what you need to know to get started:

  • Set the number of players per team. You can play with anywhere between 2 and 6 per side.
  • Here's a site where you can build your own easy-to-download tournament bracket. Choose if you will have single or double elimination.
  • Recruit a volunteer to referee.
  • Decide if your residents will need to bring their own teams or if you will pair people up to make new teams. Or, give them the option to do either (you want to give new people who don't have friends for a team an opportunity to still participate).
  • Provide water and/or Gatorade for your participants, and if possible, your fans as well. If it's hot, you can also freeze cheap wash cloths in a cooler and hand them out to cool off your players.
  • To make it fun, provide each team with custom bandannas. You can find some crazy colors/patterns online.
  • If your budget allows, provide a "free" concession stand with drinks/snacks.

This is a great chance to involve people from your church or friends who can help you put on the event. Don't be afraid to ask for help!

10 Things To Add To Your Good Ol' Pigskin Bash

football Collage

Lots of people love it, some hate it, and most love any excuse to throw or attend a party! I'm talking about good ol' North American Football. It's a culture in and of itself. And regardless of how one may feel about the grand sport, lots of people love it and it's a great tool to foster community. AKA: a great excuse to throw a party, eat some free food, and have a great time with neighbors!

We've come up with some things you can add to your pigskin shin-dig to try and successfully mingle the "I'm obsessed with football" crowd with the "Don't ever say that word around me" crowd - while having a great time and hanging out with neighbors.

  1. Add a Photo booth. Who doesn't love taking fun pictures with fun props? Depending on your budget, you can hire a company to come in and do it, or you can throw together a backdrop with some props and take fun photos on phones. Check out our Half A Dozen Ways To Photo Booth post for some idea starters and throw in some footballs if you want to keep with the pigskin theme.
  2. Host a Baggo tournament.
  3. Have some things for the kids. Parents may want to watch the game, but are concerned about their kiddos. So, provide some fun football crafts or competitive kids games while the game is on so everyone can have a great time. Check out our Pinterest board for some ideas.
  4. Vote on the best commercials. I know some people who only watch the Superbowl for the commercials - so have people vote and give away some gift cards! You could even do some voting before to see which company everyone thinks is going to have the best spot.
  5. Pair the game watching with a chili-cook off and award prizes for the best chili. Check out our Chili Pinterest board for recipes, fixins, & ideas.
  6. Pair a pigskin party with a {DIY} corner - something for the guys (or gals that love football) and something for the girls (or guys that love crafts). Some football bashes I've been to end up with all the guys in front of the TV and all the girls chatting in the other room. Why not help the ladies get a jump start on some Christmas gifts or an opportunity to finish that DIY project that's been looming?
  7. Add a philanthropic twist and encourage people to bring a donation to "enter" the party! You could do a Soles4Souls shoe drive, a toys for tots drive, or just have people bring their gently used items for donating to the local homeless/women's shelter. Check out our giving-back post here for some more ideas.
  8. Vendors, vendors, vendors. Invite some. Maybe a local brewery, a local wings place, a food truck, or a local bakery. You can give this food any theme you want. Wherever you're located, check out our local blog posts for places to get started locally.
  9. Add any sort of "bar" or "build your own..." to this event to spruce it up: baked potato bar, popcorn bar, s'mores building, hot chocolate bar, build your own nachos, chili bar, soup bar, or build your own hotdog with fun toppings. Anything that you can put "toppings" on, could be turned into a "build your own...".
  10. Do score predictions and award prizes for the winning spread/score.

We've also got some ideas about stylizing this event, flyering for this event, and including the more difficult to reach residents.

Happy pigskin-ing!

Trunk-or-Treat

Trunk or Treat FP

Full Page Flyer

Whether you have no kids in your community or all kids, clean out your trunks and get ready for some treating! You're never too old for dressing up and some candy, right? If you have kids in your community, odds are they're going to be out Trick or Treating – why not take this opportunity to build community?

Instead of everyone turning on their porch lights and excitedly awaiting those little knocks on the door, encourage residents to bring their cars to a designated parking lot, clean out their trunks, and fill them up with candy. If your budget is large, you could provide the candy. If you budget is small, make it a BYOCandy night.

Be sure to get the word out and let the trick or treaters (big or small) know! Do a best costume contest with a few categories: scariest, silliest, most DIY. You could even encourage neighbors to "dress" their trunks/cars and have a best dressed trunk contest with a give away for a free carwash/detail.

Don't forget the grub! There will be lots of candy, so that's pretty much covered. Check out our Fall Harvest Pinterest board for some fall themed eats and treats. Make it a party by inviting a local band or DJ to bring some live music to the event.

Happy Treating!

Are You Ready For Some...

football

Those are some famous words right there, and in my mind, they are always accompanied by that infamous tune that defines the beginning of the season (and every game... every week).

Whether you're a die-hard fan, a fair-weather fan, or not even a little fan, you probably have some residents or friends that would love to get together for some good ol' game-watching! Food, rivalry, camaraderie, good company – these are all you need for a great bash!

Throwing a game day party is kind of a no-brainer, so we've come up with a few different options for said party.

collage classy

Sources clockwise from top right: 1, 2, 3

1. The classy pigskin shindig. You can stylize this event with some classic printables, neutral decor, and chic undertones. For food, you can customize some of the classic favorites by throwing in different ingredients. Check out these classic spin-off tailgate recipes here. Throw in some cocktails along with some good ol' brewskies, if you want to add alcohol to your shindig.

collage comrade

Sources clockwise from top right: 1, 2, 3

2. The camaraderie bash. Does everyone in your community root for the same team? If so, host a color/team themed bash, and have a blast cheering on your team together! In my opinion, there is no overdoing it with team colors (aka: loyalty) when it comes to football. You can do colored cake, colored drinks, provide face/war paint, colored center pieces, colored balloons, or even provide colored hair spray. The more ridiculous, the more loyal the fan! Right?

collage rivalry

Sources clockwise from top right: 1, 2, 3

3. The (friendly) rivalry. Remember to keep this one friendly – we all know a guy/gal that can get a little too competitive, and it's usually not pretty. Pick a game that has a big rival (see Texas vs. OU in the flyer) and decorate everything half and half (cheese colors, drink colors, and hanging tissue football colors). Encourage everyone to dress in their team's colors/jerseys. You could even have some competition games of your own: baggo, pie in the face of the losing team, a hotdog eating contest, or award prizes for people who guess the closest score/spread!

Collage phil

Charities clockwise from top right: 1, 2, 3

4. The philanthropic. You could make this an event for a good cause by providing the opportunity to "wager to help XX charity beat the odds" and "buy in" (provide a donation for said charity) by picking the winner of the game or the score spread. (For the record - we do NOT endorse gambling on the game and all donations should go to that charity.)

Here's a cool flyer you can download and customize, and we've got loads of idea starters, inspiration, and recipes for football-related things on our Fall Parties: Football Pinterest board! We would love to see what you do with your pigskin loving community, so be sure to tag us – @aptlife!

Duct Tape Creations

Little known fact: Duck Tape makes over 100 different colors/prints of duct tape. Now, your life is complete...we know...ours too! When I was in middle school (no, I'm not going to tell you what year...) it was totally cool to make duct tape wallets. Is that still a thing? Probably not for today's tweens but for us older folks, it probably brings back some fond memories. Either way, crafting things out of duct tape is creative, fun, innovative, cheap... so let's have an evening dedicated to making duct tape creations!

You could supply the tape or have people BYO. You can have ideas on hand for people to make (a couple of things you made before hand or an ipad out for people to browse our pinterest board for ideas) and/or allow people to bring things they want to make-over: chairs, switch plates, etc. You could throw in a contest and have people vote on who made the best duct tape creation. You could make duct tape flowers for manager gifts! You can decorate your plastic cups/plates/serving dishes in fun tape if you want to go all out or make other decor out of tape itself!

Browse our Pinterest board for oodles of ideas, crafts, instructions, inspiration, etc! We beg you to tag us on Instagram (@aptlife) to see what you all come up with!

Happy Creating!

Water Balloon War!

Water Balloon War

Download Flyer

Beat the heat with a Water Balloon War and leave no resident dry! Everybody, regardless of age, loves a good water balloon fight!

You're going to need a lot of balloons. A LOT of balloons. And filling those balloons will be a big job, so invite some friends along to help.  Fill up as many water balloons as your fingers can handle and bring large buckets to carry them all.

Here are a few game ideas to play before the madness begins. When it's time for war, ensure people are split up into fair teams,  or divide by age. If you have a lot of kids in your community, you might want to have a separate, less intense game for them. Watch the balloon amount given to each game so that you don't run out on the first one.

Once the balloons are gone, the fun is not over! Have sponges out for kids to play with and water guns for battles to continue. Set out a sprinkler for people to jump through, or for the ultimate entertainment... a Slip 'N Slide. Kids (and who are we kidding... adults too!) love playing with shaving cream as well.

Check out our Pinterest board for more ideas!

Flyers: You can choose between two different options for flyers:  (1) a color, full-page flyer, and (2) a color, half-page flyer.

Instagram Scavenger Hunt

Instagram Party

Download Flyer

Take your two favorite things - Instagram and #hashtags - and turn it into a community-building adventure for your residents. Group them into teams, arm them with a list of photos to snag, create a custom hashtag so that others can see their photos at the end of the night, and then unleash them on your city for a night of fun and mayhem.

This event is particularly great for urban areas with a lot to do and see. Include must-see places, but also out-of-the-way, hole-in-the-wall treasures that only a long-time resident would know, as well as pictures of your teams interacting with people on the street, doing funny things in stores... the sky is the limit. Scratch that - sky pictures are welcome too. There are no limits.

Have your teams meet back at a certain time for drinks or dessert and to check out everyone else's photos. You can use Eventstagram or another online app to run a slideshow of everyone's pictures - just make sure they used your hashtag.

Need ideas for items to go on the scavenger hunt list? We've made a Pinterest board with plenty of resources.

Variations:

  • You can make this a family-friendly event - just choose photos that are fun for kids.
  • You can start/finish at a local bar or restaurant instead of your property.
  • Provide prizes for the winning team, as well as for categories like "most creative," "funniest," "strangest encounter with a stranger," etc.
  • Let people choose their own teams, or draw and make them random.
  • Ask people to send their favorites to the property manager so they can be uploaded to the property's Facebook page.

Flyers You can choose between two different options for flyers:  (1) a color, full-page flyer, and (2) a color, half-page flyer.

Video Game Tournament (LAN Party)

video game

Download Flyer

This event is the brainchild of David and Marquita, a CARES Team in Avondale, Arizona. They hosted a "LAN Party" which is basically a video game tournament for the non-techies out there, and had 60 people of all ages participate. It was such a hit that the residents are already talking about their next LAN party, which they plan to make even bigger.

For more info on LAN Parties, visit this Wikipedia page.

This event can be done many ways - you can set up a video game on one TV in the clubhouse, or you can ask residents to bring their own TVs and gaming systems and host several stations. Don't be afraid to ask some of your tech-savvy residents to help you set everything up.

For those waiting to compete (or who just want to watch the others), provide pizza and junk food. Keep the event casual and encourage mingling of guests.

 It's a competition. There's food. What's not to love?

Get the creative juices flowing (and maybe the heartburn medication as well) by hosting a community-wide chili cook-off. All you need to do is provide the tables, paper goods, drinks, and corn bread. Let your residents to the rest.

Optional "fixin's" for the chili can include sour cream, cheese, onions, tabasco, chips, and crackers.

If your budget allows, purchase a trophy or plaque to present to the winners, along with prizes. You can approach your complex or local businesses for donations.

  • Jump through or run over hoola hoops
  • Bounce a basketball 10 times
  • Jump rope
  • Run around garbage cans or toss bean bags into them
  • Races
  • Egg and spoon relay

New Year - New You: Weight Loss Competition

New Year

Download Flyer

Community-Wide Weight Loss Competition

Start the new year off with a bang by organizing a community-wide weight loss competition with your residents. Contestants can “buy in” for $10, and the person who loses the largest percentage of their body weight over the course of the contest wins the cash prize (all of the money used to “buy in” to the competition). You can also choose to offer additional prizes, including free rent, free apartment cleaning, or donated items from local vendors.

The kick-off party for this competition can include a healthy cooking demonstration (call your local hospital and ask a dietician to come as a guest speaker), an official weigh-in, and healthy snacks. Throughout the spring, host regular weigh-ins and post the information in a central location.

You will need to determine the length of time for your weight loss competition. You could do it anywhere from three to six months, depending on your residents.

Additional ideas for the New Year – New You Competition:

  • Ask a local gym to send a personal trainer to teach classes on how to use the weights in your complex’s gym in exchange for promoting their own gym memberships and personal training services.
  • Ask a local chef (or resident with a flair for healthy cooking) to hold healthy cooking demonstrations – focus on one food group per session, such as healthy snacks, healthy breakfasts, or meals on the go for busy families.
  • Partner with a local restaurant and ask them to host you and show your guests how to make healthy choices from their menu. Encourage the restaurant to provide a discount off the price of each guest’s dinner in exchange for you bringing a group to their establishment.
  • Watch The Biggest Loser or Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition as a group to help inspire you to continue on the path of healthy living.
  • Include websites that offer weight loss hints, calorie tracking, or healthy recipes in your monthly communications to residents.
  • Train together for a local 5K. This website offers a “couch to 5K” training plan that is ideal for beginner runners.

Helpful tools

  • Print the New Year Weigh-In Chart at your local Office Depot or Kinko’s, and post it in a high-traffic area of your complex. Use a different poster for each weigh-in. Never post or announce a individual’s actual weight – only post the percentage of weight lost, or total pounds lost by everyone in the competition.
  • www.myfitnesspal.com - This is an online tool for tracking calories consumed and burned each day. Users can “friend” others, so your residents can choose to join with others in the competition and encourage each other on this site. This site also offers a free app for your smart phone.
